Northwest Writer Influences Outcome Of Presidential Election With The "press Release Project"
Citizens have few choices when it comes to making a unique contribution to the outcome of November's presidential election, right? Wrong. Bellingham-based writer and editor Elizabeth Short has found her activism niche in the Press Release Project, a fundraiser that offers customized press releases in trade for a $50 donation to the political action campaign MoveOn.org. The Press Release Project is a way for Short to feel connected with her fundraising efforts. "When I pledged to raise money for MoveOn's efforts toward a Democratic win in the November election," Short says, "I made a list of things I could do — hold a bake sale, have a garage sale, solicit friends. It wasn't until I turned to my writing, a personal passion as well as a professional asset, that I really got excited." Why press releases? "They're a marketing tool that every business can use," Short says, "Who doesn't want a chance at free publicity? When businesses realize that a well-written release can lead to newspaper or magazine articles, radio interviews, or even television appearances, they become very interested in the idea — especially because they'll also be flexing their political muscles." Currently, Short is working on a press release for a Zydeco band in Whatcom County.

angles on its latest album, she began writing a customized press release. When it's done, she'll deliver it to at least a dozen local media organizations, some of which may be inspired to run a story. "The other great thing about this project is that I'm helping local businesses. As a small business owner myself, it's a huge bonus."But Short, whose work appears in magazines such as Family Business, Specialty Coffee Retailer, Pacific Yachting, and Fiery Foods, doesn't just write for businesses, she trains them, too. "It's the concept of teaching a person to fish.

If I deliver a great press release and nothing more, I haven't done my job," Short says. "My goal is to train people to write their own releases, to help them reach marketing independence."For a local citizen seeking to support political change, there is satisfaction in finding an activism niche. "As an American, I'm happy to be doing my part for democracy," Short says, "I'm even happier to be doing it with my writing, to be putting something so personally gratifying in the service of my political convictions."For more information on how Elizabeth Short is making a unique contribution to political change through the Press Release Project, please contact her at (360) 733-6649 or at e-mail protected from spam bots..
