Who Won The Presidential Debate? Neither - But That's Not The Point
Chicago, IL October 4, 2004 -– An article entitled "Analysis: The Differences Between Bush And Kerry On Iraq -Then & Now" in the October 4, 2004 issue of the weekly web magazine News Informant analyzes the positions of both candidates presented in the debate. Many analysts, says the article, are disappointed that neither candidate appeared to make any gaffes, that Kerry "discussed" rather than "lectured," and that Bush seemed to know more specifics than people expected. For those who see the debate as entertainment, the debate was a failure. The News Informant article makes clear, in contrast, that the debate served the useful purpose of elucidating the differences on foreign policy between the two major candidates for president in 2004. What is missing, unfortunately, is media followup that presents and discusses these positions in a way that people could fully comprehend the different positions, in order to judge for themselves. According to News Informant editor Bernard Perlstein, "The debate is not a boxing match.

The purpose of the debate is not to entertain, but to enlighten, so the public can make an educated decision based upon policy."While mainstream media sources continue to evaluate winners and losers of the first debate, News Informant clarifies the differences between the candidates on:·   How immediate a threat was Saddam Hussein? Was he a worse threat than Osama bin Laden?·   How likely were Iraqis to view the U.S. as liberators versus occupiers? ·   Which would have been worse -- the threat of a sociopathic Saddam or a destabilized post-Saddam Iraq in the unstable Middle East?·   What are the economic, military and political benefits and drawbacks of working with the UN and other allies?·   How the leaders reacted publicly to mistakes? The News Informant article details the positions of the candidates on Iraq, the pre-war threat of Saddam Hussein, the importance of UN and ally support, continuing US involvement in Iraq and the US exit strategy. "We felt compelled to present an unbiased, in-depth analysis of each candidate's viewpoint -- and the reasoning behind it", said Perlstein. The News Informant article in its entirety, and its sources, can be found on the web at:
